Wukulele Festival is pleased to announce that it has commissioned Sean O'Hagan
to write a piece for mass ukuleles, to be performed by pupils at
Whytemead First School in Worthing. Sean writes: "As a composer who is
now a father of an 8 year old and a 10 year old, I am fascinated by the
sense of music that children display from an early age. To date I have
never engaged with this and almost feel duty bound to share a
composition with children. It can only be a good thing. I will create a
piece of music that is melodic, physical, humorous and challenging to
the adults while making perfect sense to the kids. Together we'll
explore the possibilities and limitations of the ukulele and celebrate
the children's voices and limitless imagination."
Sean
O'Hagan (UK) is co-founder and writer of the High Llamas, a group which
seeks to find the common ground between 1960s European soundtrack,
musique concrete and The Beach Boys. Sean is also a major collaborator
with Stereolab, The Coral and Super Furry Animals. His first venture
into music was as co-founder and co-writer of Microdisney which gained
world-wide cult status throughout the late 1980s. Since then he has
toured worldwide, arranged, produced and recorded numerous albums and is currently collaborating with Belgian artist
Jean Pierre Miller to produce the Musical Painting and Musical
Wheel.
Music for Sixty Ukuleles and Sixty Children will be premiered at St. Paul's Centre, Chapel Road, Worthing on Friday 8th October 2010 at 4.00pm. Admission free.
The School Ukulele Commission is kindly supported with funds from the PRS for Music Foundation and Grassroots Grants.
